Mural Health

Mural Health | A platform for participants in clinical trials

SUMMARY

I worked on this product during my time at New Deal Design (2022). This was a comprehensive effort, in which we helped the client create the product from scratch.

I was of the designers responsible for UX and UI for webapp, participant app and marketing website, working with cross-functional teams, presenting regularly internally and to client, and delivering final assets for development.
I also created the initial design system concept for their products and their splash screen animation.

The client’s goal was to increase clinical trial adherence by facilitating reimbursement and other logistical needs, such as transportation and communication with trial staff.

Humanizing Clinical Trials

Clinical trial dropout rates are high, and each dropout is costly. Mural Health set out to change that by simplifying reimbursements and other logistical needs for participants. As a design team, we recognized that supporting logistics wasn’t enough — we also needed to humanize the clinical trial experience by creating small moments of delight.

Below I highlight the design thinking behind some of the design details and micro-interactions on the platform, and how they help make a challenging clinical trial journey feel more intuitive and enjoyable.

Contextual Homepage

The homepage is designed to adapt to each stage of the clinical trial journey. When a participant has an upcoming appointment, that information is featured prominently. Otherwise, the page highlights their overall progress in the study.

We also include a same-day shortcut for booking an Uber, which becomes available on the homepage on the day of the participant’s appointment.

Payment micro-interaction

Our research showed that payment is the primary motivator for most participants, making it a critical touchpoint in the experience. To acknowledge and elevate this moment, we introduced a small but meaningful micro-interaction: a branded gradient animation that appears when the user taps to receive their payment.
